The 1VII had two matches this week. The match against Mayfield on Saturday was a closely fought one and there were 2 goals in it throughout the match. They were a very aggressive/physical team but we held our own and played amazingly against a real tough opposition. Final score was 13-11, Lila got player of the match. Coache’s player: Maria for linking the defending and attacking play in the centre third.
Their second match on Thursday was against Hurst. Another tough match against a skillful team. We started off well and both teams were moving the ball well down the court and scoring. The weather conditions were difficult but Erin and Alice’s shooting was brilliant, considering the tough conditions. We were drawing 6-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. The rain came down heavier in the 2nd quarter and the ball was slipping out our hands, so Hurst got a few goals up on us and we started to trail. The same happened in the 3rd quarter and we went about 8 goals down. Our defense was great again, Lila (GK/GD) was tipping the ball frequently and Mbali was marking tightly and putting pressure on her GA. Amelia (C), as always, drives forwards at just the right time to offer a well needed option, supported by Maria (WD) and Izzy (WA). Everyone was really trying to drive forward, to offer a short pass, we didn’t throw the ball away much at all. It was good that they were adapting their play to suit the conditions. Elodie stepped in as GK in the end quarter, she plays well anywhere! and we actually had our best quarter in the last one, we drew 5-5. However Hurst had already got ahead of us and so took the win 29-18. A good result against a strong team.
Player of the match: Erin
Coache’s player: Amelia – her passes are so accurate and her drives are well-timed, always saving us at the last second!
Highlight of the match: Erin and Alice’s shooting accuracy being so high in difficult conditions
